AUBURN HILL, Mich. — An 18-month-old girl went into cardiac arrest while visiting a mall with her family, luckily an off-duty corrections officer was nearby and able to help.
Vivian Runnels seemed to be in perfect health when the family left Grand Rapids to visit Sea Life at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills, ClickOnDetroit reports.
While in the food court, Vivian began having a seizure. Off-duty Genessee County corrections deputy Rocky Hensley thought she was choking and offered to help. He then recognized the signs of cardiac arrest and began chest compressions. After about 30 compressions, Vivian took a breath and started crying. The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office honored Hensley for his actions this week.
After the Feb. 10 incident, Vivian was diagnosed with influenza-A. She is now home and healthy.
