GROVELAND, N.Y. — Ten New York state corrections officers are being treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a vacant building at Groveland Correctional Facility in Livingston County.
The officers were injured while responding to the fire Monday evening. It started in an air conditioning unit in a building known as the Peterson Academic Building, the Department of Corrections tells WHEC-TV.
The injured officers are being treated at local hospitals and several others have been treated at the prison.
Acting Commissioner Anthony Annucci issued a statement thanking the officers for helping to extinguish the fire and wishing them a speedy recovery.
