SOMERVILLE — Two sheriff’s officers were honored Thursday for their quick actions in realizing a suspicious package in a brown paper bag was in fact an improvised explosive device.

NJ.com reports that when officers Joseph Naccarato and Brendan Gattone realized the seriousness of the situation, they secured the device, cleared the immediate area around the Bridgewater Township Municipal Complex and contacted authorities.

The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad arrived and confirmed that the device was an explosive.

The officers were praised in a ceremony for acting without hesitation and putting themselves at great personal risk to protect the public.
