3rd Canadian CO fired over wildcat strike, AUPE says

AUPE: Provincial government has reneged on its promise to not punish workers who took part in the strike

ALBERTA, Canada — A third correctional officer at the Fort Saskatchewan Institution has been fired for being involved in last April’s wildcat strike, according to the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

The officer was a supervisor at the provincial facility. The two previous officers, also supervisors, were let go “for abandoning their posts to go on strike,” as stated by Solicitor General spokesman Dan Laville, which put inmates, other officers and the public in danger, according to Yahoo.

The officers were also found to have disobeyed a direct order to admit new inmates.

AUPE Guy Smith says the provincial government has reneged on its promise to not punish workers who took part in the strike.

AUPE is filing grievances on the three dismissals and plans to take legal action against the province.
