CONCORD — Seven officers with the New Hampshire Department of Corrections were honored for their bravery during an incident where an inmate with a homemade weapon made an attempt on staff.

Concord Patch reports that two of the officers received the Medal of Honor, the first time the award has been given out since 1996. Commissioner William L. Wrenn awarded the medals.

CO Peter Ash and Lt. Robert Parent both received the Medal of Honor for placing themselves between the attacking inmate and a Correctional Officer Trainee. Lt. Michael Marden received a Life Saving medal after he tackled the inmate from behind and controlled the arm holding the weapon.

Sgt. Michael Mosher, CO Joseph Laramie, CO Jason Whitney, and CO Todd Phelps all received the DOC Team Commendation citation bar for their roles in helping manage the incident.

“The actions of these officers were exemplary and showed professionalism and a devotion to public duty,” Wrenn said. “They are to be commended for their extraordinary acheivements.”

All officers are with the New Hampshire State Prison for Men.
