Mental health training a major focus

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is seeking an additional $77 million for its 2014-2015 budget.

According to Triblive, the majority of the money would be spent on salaries and benefit increases for over 15,250 employees.

Another portion would go toward rehabilitating mentally ill inmates, which make up one-fourth of those incarcerated in the state.

Officials report that they haven’t been as successful as they’d hoped in curbing the prison population, even though Pennsylvania is currently experiencing the slowest prison population growth in three decades.
