NEW YORK — New legislation would increase the sentence for helping inmate breakouts from 21/3 and seven years to 81/3 to 25 years.

The Times Union reports that the bill was introduced by State Sen. Kathy Marchione.

The penalty for helping an inmate escape who is serving time for committing a class A felony is now a class D felony.

The change comes after Joyce Mitchell was accused of assisting Richard Matt and David Sweat escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility. She was arrested and charged on Friday.
