CHICAGO — Officials at the Cook County Jail in Chicago put the facility on lockdown after a big chunk of its staff couldn’t get to work because of a blizzard.
The sheriff’s department says that about 36 percent of the staff did not report to work late Sunday into Monday — 288 of them on one shift alone.
With the lockdown, the jail is drastically limiting visitation of detainees and the movements of detainees is largely limited to court appearances and medical appointments.
The Cook County Jail is the largest single-site jail in the United States. Lockdowns are rare and typically are called after some kind of disturbance.
