UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A Lanesboro Correctional Institute corrections officer died when his vehicle crashed into a stone median while he was traveling 115 miles per hour.

WSOC TV reports that troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash that killed William R. Womack Jr.

The institute stated that Womack was not scheduled to work on Tuesday and they do not believe he was headed to or from work at the time of the accident.

Womack had been an employee at Lanesboro since 2003 and was one of the original employees to open a new facility that year.

Authorities were alerted to the scene by a man who was woken up by the crash.

“They took a big brick wall. I’m afraid the guy’s probably not going to be … let me see if he’s alive,” the caller told 911.

The same man who called 911 says the road has seen several accidents and wants the speed limit reduced.
