ALBION — A corrections officer at the Orleans Correctional Facility has been praised by a union official for saving the life of a mentally troubled New York City convicted robber serving a 20 year prison term who tried to commit suicide.

Mike Dildine, Western Regional vice president of the New York State Corrections Officers Police Benevolent Association Inc., said the officer’s quick action on April 16 proved the value of the training that all such officers receive.

Dildine said the inmate threatened suicide, then used a metal can lid to cut himself several times on the arm, face and head.

The officer subdued the man, suffering cuts and exposure to the inmate’s blood. Both the officer and the inmate were treated in the correctional facility’s medical office.

“The quick actions by the officer should be commended,” Dildine said.
