Almost ten years ago, the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN) filmed the latest in cell entry tactics. It was billed as the answer to the question: “What do you do when all negotiation attempts have been exhausted?”
Although the physical cell entry tactics filmed at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office’s Jail are still state-of-the-art, corrections has come light years in our understanding of Tactical Communication and sound negotiation tactics that take place at the cell door.
This experience is based on the research of Dr. George Thompson of the Verbal Judo Institute, other professional trainers, and the experience of literally thousands of correctional professionals.
Corrections1 wants you, the correctional professional to get involved in this discussion by commenting on how you and your agency would now try to diffuse this situation using communication skills and negotiation tactics. Watch the video below, and then give us your ideas on how this situation could have been resolved short of a physical cell entry. You can comment directly on this page, or visit the discussion area that’s been set up in the Corrections1 Forums.
Gary Klugiewicz will act as the moderator, track your suggestions, and then add his and other correctional trainers’ suggestions to yours in a summary that Corrections1 will post in the near future.
This is a first for Corrections1. We are hosting an interactive problem-solving training research project on the Internet that’s designed to benefit all in corrections. Participate and let us know what you are doing, and assist us in generating and disseminating this information. Knowledge is power.
