Correctional officer opens fire while chasing mistakenly freed inmate

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — An on-duty correctional officer opened fire on an inmate freed by mistake Tuesday in Washington Heights.

The NY Daily News reports that four officers were attempting to arrest a man, unnamed, who had been prematurely released from Department of Corrections custody around 5 p.m.

The officer fired a single shot from his firearm. No one was injured.

The inmate was eventually arrested and the DOC is investigating how he was released. It’s not known where the man was being held.
