SPOKANE COUNTY, Pa. — The deputy who shot at a fleeing inmate at the Deaconess Hospital earlier this week has been identified.
Sandy Rief is a five-year veteran of the Spokane County Detention Services, according to the Spokesman.
Rief fired at inmate Cameron Trevino following an altercation on the fourth floor of the hospital around 2 a.m. Rief missed Trevino, but the inmate was taken back into custody without injury.
Rief was also one of six deputies involved in subduing Christopher Parker who died of a methamphetamine overdose aggravated by restraint measures used by jail staff in February 2013.
The death was ruled a homicide, but after an investigation the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office ruled the actions of Rief and the other deputies justified.
Rief received commendations for his actions dealing with suicidal subjects in May and August 2012. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force before joining the county as a corrections officer.
He remains on paid administrative leave pending an investigation per officer-involved shooting protocols.
