WAYMART, Pa. — They’re coming from throughout the country.
Delegations of federal prison honor guards from across the nation are en route to Northeast Pennsylvania to pay respects to fallen brother Eric Williams of Nanticoke, a union representative said Thursday.
Hundreds of federal corrections officers are expected to attend today’s public viewing and Saturday’s funeral for the 34-year-old killed Monday in a vicious attack by an inmate at U.S. Penitentiary at Canaan in Wayne County, said Philip Glover, the northeast regional vice president for Mr. Williams’ union, the American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals
“Everybody knows what happened. Everybody feels it,” Mr. Glover said. “What we’re trying to do is make sure the family knows he was part of something larger - a law enforcement family.”
Mr. Glover said he spoke to delegations from Illinois, South Carolina and even farther that began their drives Thursday. The Correctional Peace Officers Foundation National Honor Guard, based in Sacramento, Calif., is on its way as well, he said.
