SIOUX FALLS, N.D. — An inmate wrangled a transport to a nearby hospital to make an escape attempt, but was thwarted by DOC employees.

The Argus Leader reports that Alonzo Young claimed to have taken a substantial amount of medication, causing prison employees to rush him to a local hospital on Sunday.

While using the bathroom, Young reappeared with an 8.5-inch long metal object and waved it at staff members. Two staff members were able to wrestle the item away from him and hospital security was called to assist.

Young was restrained to the hospital bed while the item was collected for evidence. There were no injuries to hospital staff, prison employees or the inmate.

Young has since been returned to the Jameson Annex in Sioux Falls, where he is currently serving several sentences for robbery and assault on a law enforcement officer.
