Crash claims Ill. corrections officer

EVANSVILLE, Ill. — An Illinois Department of Corrections prison guard died Friday evening when the Mustang he was driving crashed in rural Wayne County, Ill.

Samuel L. Clark, 47, was driving a 2007 Ford Mustang westbound on Illinois Rt. 161 in western Wayne County when he ran off the road, hit a culvert and went airborne. Wayne County Coroner Jimmy Taylor said Clark was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 5 p.m.

Taylor said Clark was employed at the prison in Lawrenceville, Ill. A state police accident reconstruction officer is investigating.
