DANNEMORA — Captured inmate David Sweat has been telling all to investigators about how he and Richard Matt planned and successfully executed their escape from an upstate New York prison.
It was a plan at least six months in the making. Several people briefed on the investigation told the New York Times that Sweat has portrayed himself as the mastermind behind the elaborate June 6 breakout.
According to the Times, he said he had long planned to escape, but it wasn’t until he was moved into a cell in January near the now-deceased Matt that he moved forward with his plan. The 35-year-old said he used a hacksaw blade to cut a hole in his cell and then the back of Matt’s.
