GLOUCESTER COUNTY — White-gloved Gloucester County corrections officers — Officer Agostino “Gus” Fare’s brothers — stood guard in their dress uniforms Monday, greeting mourners at The Church of the Incarnation in Mantua Township.

All afternoon, the guards escorted other uniformed and plain-clothes law enforcement from around the state through the church’s tall cherry red doors to pay final respects to Fare, a 35-year-old county corrections officer who died suddenly while on duty last week.

“We’re here to celebrate the life of Gus,” said Sgt. Mike Hickman, a county corrections officer.

Hickman said the message was from Fare’s immediate family — his wife Brandy and two daughters — who were inside the church.

“Everyone is together. The kids are doing good,” reported Mike Bartleson, Fare’s childhood pal, who stood outside the church in the sun, taking a minute alone to think of his buddy.
