SALT LAKE CITY — A trio of Democratic state lawmakers say a move to rebuild Utah’s state prison on Salt Lake City’s west side will hurt the local economy.
State Reps. Sandra Hollins and Angela Romero and Sen. Senator Luz Escamilla plan to hold a news conference Monday morning to protest a state commission’s recommendation that the prison currently in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper be rebuilt about three miles west of Salt Lake City International Airport.
Hollins and Escamilla both represent the area in the state Legislature. Romero represents a nearby west side Salt Lake City district.
Gov. Gary Herbert has called lawmakers into a special session on Wednesday to decide whether to approve the site for the prison.
Salt Lake City officials oppose the move. Mayor Ralph Becker says the city is considering legal action to block it.
