WAYMART, Pa. — The family of slain federal correctional officer Eric Williams is asking his co-workers not to blame themselves for the killing.
The 34-year-old guard was beaten and repeatedly stabbed at U.S. Penitentiary at Canaan last week as he was preparing to lock inmates in their cells for a nightly head count.
Mr. Williams’ father, Donald, said prison officials called him Tuesday to tell him that one of his son’s co-workers had killed himself. On Monday night, officials confirmed that a correctional officer at the federal prison had committed suicide in a wooded area near an Archbald gun range.
Shortly after hearing about the suicide, Donald Williams responded by releasing a statement directed to the correctional officers that the family “blames nobody for the death of Eric except the assailant who attacked him.”
