BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County sheriff’s deputy has been recognized as the state’s top corrections deputy for his work, including helping find and save two children.

The Florida Sheriff’s Association honored Cpl. James “Jim” Ris during its annual conference this week.

“I could not be more proud of Jim and his outstanding accomplishments that demonstrate his commitment to the protection of the citizens of Brevard County and to his amazing family,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. “Jim’s actions serve as a constant reminder of the incredible dedication and service the men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office provide to our citizens each and every day.”

Ris was honored for his work detecting contraband in the Brevard County Detention Center in Sharpes, including a recent discovery of an alcoholic beverage made by an inmate. Ris was also selected because of two outstanding rescues he was a part of in 2012.
