MIDDLESEX COUNTY — The former corrections officer who shot himself at a gun range this week was expected to be sentenced to three years in prison.
NJ.com reports that Jeffrey Mazeski in October admitted to aggravated assault, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon as part of a plea agreement. He was expected to receive a five-year prison sentence with parole eligibility after three years.
Mazeski pulled over a 17-year-old driver in May 2013 to berate him for what was believed to be improper or aggressive driving. During the incident, he allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at a 15-year-old passenger.
Two months later, Mazeski was accused of going to a Starbucks with a handgun, badge and handcuffs in his possession, where he represented himself as a police officer.
Additional weapons offenses and the impersonating a law enforcement officer charges were expected to be dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Mazeski shot himself at the Shore Shot Pistol Range on Monday. He worked for the Department of Corrections in 2007 until he was fired in 2013.
Attorney Steven Altman, who represented Mazeski, said Mazeski was concerned about going to jail but didn’t show any indication that he might commit suicide.
