ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County correctional officer admitted to lying about an inmate takedown, then retired before getting in trouble.
WFTV reports that former Sgt. Ivette Garcia lied in the 13-page report due to feeling rushed to get the report done.
Her supervisor raised a red flag on the report after it was discovered that Garcia never interviewed why officers used force on an inmate who kicked a nurse.
In the report, Garcia indicated that she interviewed the nine officers involved even though five were off duty the day she claimed to have interviewed them.
Garcia retired just as she was about to be disciplined for falsifying the reports.
“The sergeants, they run everything,” said law enforcement expert Mark Lang. “If the first-line sergeants don’t follow the rules, and they don’t do what they’re supposed to, then there’s a breakdown.”
