CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A 29-year-old man has admitted to using drugs during the time he worked as a guard at Anamosa State Penitentiary.

The Des Moines Register reports that Ethan Darrow pleaded guilty Monday in a federal Cedar Rapids courtroom to a felony charge of possession of a firearm by an unlawful drug user.

Court records say Darrow had an assault rifle while he used marijuana and cocaine between January and October last year. The rifle was assigned to him for his job on tower duty at the high-security prison.

Darrow faces up to 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced at a later date.

The newspaper says Iowa U.S. Attorney Kevin Techau is expected to announce criminal charges on Tuesday in a case involving four other former Anamosa correctional officers.
