INA, Ill. —A 22-year-old Marion County Sheriff’s Department correctional officer was fatally injured early Wednesday when the prisoner transport van he was driving collided with a semi on Interstate 57.
Adam S. Conrad of Sandoval was transported to a local hospital where he died. A 17-year-old male from Salem who was in the van suffered incapacitating injuries. He was taken first to a local hospital and then transferred to a regional hospital.
The semi driver, Donald D. Chambers, 46, of Springville, Ind., was not injured.
The crash occurred at 7:58 a.m. The transport van was traveling north on I-57 at Mile Post 84 when Conrad lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered roadway. The van spun, entered the median, and crossed over into the southbound traffic into the path of the semi. The semi struck the van’s passenger side. The semi then jack-knifed, coming to rest on the right shoulder and in the right lane.
Conrad and the Salem teen had to be extricated from the van.
After the crash, traffic was being diverted off of I-57 southbound onto I-64 eastbound to Illinois Route 37. The road closure lasted for about six hours.
