CHICAGO — An Englewood man is facing criminal charges after he was shot by an off-duty Cook County correctional officer during an exchange of gunfire on the city’s West Side earlier this week.
Nicolas Mobley, 22, of the 200 block of West 61st Street, is facing one felony count of attempted first degree murder, one felony count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer and one felony count of armed robbery, according to Chicago police.
Police said Mobley was robbing someone at gunpoint about 10:25 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of West Madison Street when an off-duty Cook County correctional officer spotted the robbery.
The officer, who witnesses said was on his way to work and knew the man being robbed, intervened, and Mobley allegedly fired shots at the officer, according to police and a spokeswoman for Cook County sheriff’s office. The officer returned fire, hitting the 22-year-old in the lower right leg.
Police said Mobley then fled the scene and went to Stroger Hospital, where officers later took him into custody.
The off-duty officer was also hospitalized as a precaution, according to the Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman. No one else was injured in the incident, police said.
On Tuesday, Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered Mobley held without bond, according to court records. Mobley did not appear in court due to his injuries. He remains at Stroger Hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition, police said.
Mobley has been arrested several times, including in September 2011 for residential burglary, according to court records. In that case, Mobley pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation, court records show.
