SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — An inmate accused of setting his girlfriend on fire jumped from the second tier of jail cells on the day room floor of the San Diego County Jail.
NBC News reports that medical staff attempted to save Vidal Webb, but he was pronounced dead at 10:21 a.m.
Webb is believed to have started a fire inside a house early Sunday morning, which left his girlfriend in critical condition at the UCSD Medical Center’s burn ward.
He wasn’t at the home when first responders arrived to deal with the fire, and authorities found him at another residence where a nine-hour standoff ensued. Webb finally emerged with his hands up.
He was booked into jail on suspicion of arson causing great bodily injury and attempted murder. He was only in jail for about a day when he died.
