Convicted of five lesser felonies

FORT EDWARD, NY — The state prison inmate who was on trial for trying to stab a correction officer to death was acquitted of attempted murder Wednesday afternoon but convicted of five lesser felonies.

Juan Diaz, 33, could face up to 25 years to life as a persistent felon in light of his extensive criminal record, which includes at least four prior felony convictions for murder and robbery, among other charges.

He stabbed a correction officer at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in the neck and torso last June 19. The officer was not seriously hurt.

The jury found Diaz guilty of felony charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and promoting prison contraband, but found the evidence was insufficient to prove he was trying to kill the officer.
