SPRINGFIELD — The minimum-security prison in Vandalia is on lockdown after an inmate attacked a corrections officer during a power outage.
The Quad-City Times reports that the officer suffered cuts and scratches to his face and forehead while moving an inmate during a storm-related power outage.
Inmates were reportedly “rowdy” since some back-up lights failed to activate.
The inmate was moved to a maximum-security segregation unit. The Department of Corrections is considering criminal prosecution.
The electrical outage affected the prison and an estimated 1,700 homes and businesses in the area following an intense storm that rolled through the area on Wednesday. Power was restored to the facility around 11:50 p.m.
The back-up lighting system malfunction is still being investigated.
