DICKINSON, ND – A Dickinson Jail inmate attempted to escape the facility by digging a hole in the bathroom ceiling over the course of a week in February.

According to WDAY, the 20-by-20 inch hole was ‘beaten’ into the ceiling of a shared restroom in a 16-men dormitory area at the Southwest Multi-County Correctional Center.

Jail staff received a tip about inmate Carroll Wells’ plans and found the hole. They then went through old surveillance video and found footage that showed him working away.

Wells had been using a rock to create the hole, which was confiscated by jail staff.

He caused about $3,000 in damages to the bathroom. He has been charged with criminal mischief, along with his original charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle, false reports to law enforcement and driving without a valid license.
