SAGINAW, Mich. — The inmate responsible for striking a corrections officer with a padlock inside a sock before stabbing him five times has been charged with four felonies.
MLive reports that the officer, Kevin Ott, was left with a fractured skull and punctured lung after the attack.
Daniel J. Derda, the inmate responsible, is charged with assault with intent to murder, assaulting a prison employee, and possessing a weapon as a prisoner. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Derda is currently serving 15 to 25 years in prison for a carjacking and armed robbery charges.
He has since been transferred to the St. Louis Correctional Facility and a district judge will arraign him via video conferencing from that facility.
