ROCKWALL, Texas — An inmate who went to great lengths to escape during a hospital visit in Rockwall County has been recaptured.
The Rockwall Herald Banner reports that Jose Marie Pedraza-Cervantes escaped at Lake Pointe Medical Center and was recaptured near a highway a few hours later.
Pedraza-Cervantes was able to slip a leg shackle when one of his two escorts took a bathroom break. He broke a nearby window by headbutting it and was able to fight off the remaining officer. He then jumped out a third story window onto a first story roof.
Rockwall Sheriff’s deputies tracked Pedraza-Cervantes with a K-9 unit, following him after he managed to get into a car and work his way along the Lack Ray Hubbard shoreline. They believed he was checking boats to find a means of escape.
The Dallas Police Department, Department of Parks and Wildlife and the Rockwall Fire Department all had boats on the lake to prevent Pedraza-Cervantes from managing this means of escape.
He then crossed the I-30 and was found curled up into a ball by a concrete barrier. He gave no resistance as he was taken into custody.
The incident is being investigated and Pedraza-Cervantes could face more charges. He was originally jailed for drug possession.
