WINCHESTER, Va. — Inmates at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center are learning how to grow a hydrophonic garden, which would give them invaluable skills upon their release.
Your 4 State reports that the majority of the materials for the garden were donated by the Shenandoah Area Council Boy Scouts Chapter.
One inmate used his electrical skills to install a solar paneled fan, while others are excited to learn how to grow things. All food grown in the garden would be picked and used in the prison kitchen to be cooked for the entire jail.
“Let’s teach these guys something,” said Sergeant Denzil Cooper, Supervisor of the Community Inmate Work Force Program. “Let’s give them something to take away from this program, and take with them to the outside.”
The inmates are hoping to use the garden and the greenhouse it will reside in year round.
