CLARKSBURG – A Salem Correctional Center inmate’s escape was cut short when he bummed a smoke from a man who turned out to be an off-duty correctional officer.
The Exponent Telegram reports that Douglas Kidd III escaped May 15 after scaling a fence. Ten minutes into the next day, Kidd asked for a smoke from off-duty correctional officer Josh Nutt at the Dollar General.
As Nutt was retrieving a cigarette from his vehicle, he realized the man was an escaped inmate.
Kidd was then returned to the prison by on-duty correctional officers. Kidd had also been injured while climbing the prison’s fence.
Kidd is currently serving time for a drug charge.
