OAHU, Hawaii — The recent escape of an inmate from the Oahu Community Correctional Center is highlighting a number of necessary changes at the facility.
An anonymous corrections officer came forward to name some issues, according to KHON.
He says simple things like lights not working and toilets not flushing have become so common that they’re a joke among staff.
The CO says the hole that the inmate, Daniel Skelton, recently escaped through is actually a revolving door of sorts that allows other inmates to leave and return with contraband.
“That’s how they get in and out of the building, through that hole – the very same hole that should have been closed six or eight months ago,” he told KHON.
In response to Skelton’s escape, the facility has installed a new fence and the gate that Skelton walked through to escape is now kept locked.
The largest issue is the budget, as well as a lack of COs. Some COs are working three 16-hour shifts, and the anonymous source admits that, yes, sometimes they do fall asleep on the job.
“You work back-to-back 16-hour shifts in a row, there’s just no way you can keep your eyes open. I rarely work two in a row, I hate it.”
Skelton’s escape is still an on-going investigation.
