SHENANDOAH — On a night when members of the Shenandoah High School volleyball team were to hold a scrimmage, they instead were learning about the untimely death of their coach, Chad Van Houten.
Van Houten, 45, of rural Shenandoah was one of the drivers in a two-vehicle collision around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, about four miles east of Shenandoah on 190th Street.
Shenandoah High School Superintendent Jeff Hiser broke the news to the team in the same gym Van Houten spent so much time in as a well-respected and well-loved coach.
A school board meeting was postponed and grief counselors were called in to the school to speak with staff, students and members of the community.
