Jail seeks equipment for slippery situations

Staff members are worried about diseases being spread through bodily fluids

HOPWELL TWP., Pa. — After an inmate covered himself in feces and Vaseline to prevent officers from grabbing hold of him, Beaver County Jail staff is looking for better equipment to deal with such situations.

The Times Online reports that though they will continue to wear gown-type clothing for such incidents, staff members are hoping for something more extensive, like durable coveralls.

Jail reports state that incidents like this, where inmates cover themselves with feces or other materials, occur about three times a year. The incidents usually come in spurts, due to copy catting.

“We do have disposable coveralls,” said Jen Monza, the chairwoman of the jail’s safety committee. “The problem is, they’re afraid because they are porous and maybe if they do have feces or blood or any kind of fluid, they could be contaminated.”

Officers are concerned that diseases could be spread.
