HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police said an inmate at the Christian County jail shot himself with a jailer’s gun in a Hopkinsville hospital emergency room.

The police said in a news release that 40-year-old inmate Jeffrey Downs had been transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center around noon on Saturday for an unrelated medical issue.

As he was being treated by medical staff, police said Downs took a gun from the deputy jailer who was escorting him and fatally shot himself. No one else was injured. Hospital spokesman Jim Goss told the Kentucky New Era that hospital staff tried to save the man’s life but were unsuccessful.
