NEW ORLEANS — More than 400 inmates were moved Friday morning from the Orleans Parish Prison in preparation for Tropical Storm Karen, according to a statement from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. Seventy additional people were released.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman said 298 male inmates and 134 female inmates were relocated from the temporary tents at the Orleans Parish Prison to State Department of Public Safety and Corrections facilities “out of harm’s way.” The statement did not say which facilities are taking the inmates.
About 70 additional individuals were released. They had been booked for municipal offenses or misdemeanor traffic charges, according to a 10 a.m. statement from OPSO spokesman Phil Stelly. They were released under the authority of an “en banc” order from local traffic and municipal court judges, he said.
