OAHU, Hawaii — Following the escape and recapture of an inmate last week, a state lawmaker is calling for an oversight committee to revamp the entire system.
KHON2 reports that Sen. Will Espero (the chair of the Senate committee on public safety) wants a committee of lawmakers and experts to suggest ideas on how to prevent escapes, deal with visitation cancellations and prevent contraband from being smuggled in.
“Now this is not just about talking for the sake of talking,” Espero said. “I and many other people out there are just not happy with some of the things happening with the prison and corrections system and we want to see change.”
