BALTIMORE — A man who was being treated at St. Joseph Medical Center and was in the custody of two Baltimore County Department of Corrections officers, jumped from a fifth floor window, killing himself Thursday, county police said.

The man managed “to move away from his bed, break the window, and jump to the ground below,” before corrections officers could bring him under control, police said in a statement.

The incident occurred around 11:38 p.m. at the Towson hospital. The man was declared dead at the scene. His body was taken to the medical examiner’s office.

Police did not identify the man Friday because his family had not yet been notified, a police spokesman said.

The Baltimore County Police internal affairs section and the Baltimore County Department of Corrections are investigating.

County spokeswoman Ellen Kobler said the corrections officers continue working, but that the incident is under review.
