BATON ROUGE, La. – A man sentenced to 40 years behind bars for manslaughter was accidentally released due to a clerical error earlier this month.
Benjuiel Johnson was accidentally released from the Dixon Correctional Institute last week when his manslaughter conviction did not appear in the system. He was released for “good behavior for prior charges,” according to The Washington Post. Authorities didn’t realize he was missing until a citizen spotted him on the street.
Johnson also has a charge for battery of a correctional officer, but he was processed for that, posted bond and released.
A manhunt is now underway. Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said he hopes that Johnson’s family will help talk him into turning himself in.
