SUFFOLK COUNTY, Mass. — A man attempting to climb a fence and escape the Suffolk County Jail was quickly apprehended by a corrections officer during her rounds.
According to the Riverhead News Review, CO Barbara McFadden spotted inmate Matthew Hubrins scaling an interior fence while doing her regular tour on the inside of the recreation yard.
She ordered him to the ground, but Hubrins ignored her commands and kept climbing. By the time he reached the razor wire at the top of the fence, he had changed his mind.
McFadden had called for backup at this point, and with her fellow officers handcuffed Hubrins once he complied with orders to get on the ground.
Hubrins is currently in jail for the 2012 stabbing death of his stepfather.
McFadden was praised for her quick response to the incident by Sheriff Vincent DeMarco.
“She was able to verbally diffuse the situation, protect the safety of her fellow officers and other inmates, and apprehend the inmate quickly,” he said.
“Officer McFadden’s professionalism under these circumstances should be commended.”
