MDOC: Inmate deaths are on the decline

Mortality rate has dropped 41 percent, from 441 deaths per 1,000 inmates in 2007 to 260 deaths in 2012

JACKSON — Latest statistics from the Bureau of Justice show that inmate deaths are on a decline.

WLOX reports that the mortality rate has dropped 41 percent, from 441 deaths per 1,000 inmates in 2007 to 260 deaths in 2012.

Most inmate deaths are due to heart disease and cancer, according to the BJS.

As of this posting, Miss. has 3,936 inmates suffering from cancer or some sort of cardiovascular ailment.

Less than seven percent of deaths in Miss. are due to violence or suicide.
