GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A sergeant in Kent County is adding to his wall of achievements with a national award from the ACA.
Sgt. Joe Plowman, described by his coworkers as approachable and personable, was named the 2014 correctional supervisor of the year by the ACA and was presented the award back in April, according to MLive.
Plowman has been a corrections officer since 1992 and has since earned a reputation as the agency’s go-to person for special assignments. He was selected as the department’s 2013 corrections officer of the year.
He currently supervises the jail’s 27-person courthouse and transfer crew, manages the agency’s alcohol testing program and is involved with charities and fundraisers. Plowman helped coordinate the American Jail Association’s annual training conference in Grand Rapids.
On the job, he’s handled multiple evacuations, including bomb threats and, most notably, the collapse of a crane on the jail in 2012 that forced the evacuation and transportation of 200 inmates to neighboring county jails.
“Sgt. Plowman isn’t a leader simply because he has been placed on a supervisory role; instead he demonstrates leadership daily by showing his deputies that he is not above performing any of the tasks asked of them,” Sheriff’s officials stated in a press release.
