CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — Nine correctional officers who were fired after the death of an inmate as part of a statewide attempt to clean up corruption are back at work.
NBC reports that all of the officers who were fired after inmate Michael Walker died from blows to the head, neck and stomach before suffocating have returned to work, save one who resigned.
The union representing the officers filed grievances on the officers’ behalf and arbitrators hearing the officers’ cases said the state hasn’t shown any evidence that the officers committed wrongdoing.

The officers say they were following procedure the night Walker died.
The Department of Corrections says the officers currently have no contact with inmates and are working administrative positions. The investigation into Walker’s death is now in the hands of the State Attorney’s Office.
