DOBSON, N.C. — Surry County authorities say a man charged with a sexual offense involving a child has died after he jumped to his death in an apparent suicide at the jail in Dobson.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson told local reporters that 42-year-old Garvie Roe Dixon of Pilot Mountain jumped from a walkway in his cell block and fell about 20 feet on Friday. Dixon died at the scene.

Dixon had been held in the jail since his October 2013 arrest and had been scheduled to appear in court May 15.

Atkinson said the State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing Dixon’s death.
