WINDSOR, NC — A correctional officer with the Bertie Correctional Institute is recovering from injury after attempting to secure a prisoner.
WNCT reports that on June 24, police responded to an inmate assault at the facility involving CO Foster Quinn Peaks, 21.
Peaks said he was attempting to secure Alphonso Kirkwood, 23, in his cell when Kirkwood attacked him. Peaks was knocked to the ground, where Kirkwood began kicking him in the face.
Peaks suffered non-life threatening injuries, including contusions to the head and face.
Kirkwood was serving a sentence for firing a weapon into an occupied property, and new charges are pending against him.
