LINCOLN — Nebraska is just one of five state correctional departments chosen to participate in a new Vera Institute of Justice project.

The Safe Alternatives for Segregation Initiative (SAS Initiative) would give chosen DOCs two years of technical assistance that will focus on analyzing the use of segregated housing and developing recommendations for its safe reduction, according to NBC News.

It would also offer initial assistance with implementation of those recommendations.

Other states chosen include Oregon and North Carolina, along with local departments in New York City and New Jersey.

The new initiative expands on Vera’s Segregation Reduction Project, which since 2010 has worked with state and local departments of corrections in Washington, New Mexico and Pennsylvania, to reduce their reliance on segregation.
