Nev. — A lawsuit filed by a Jewish inmate has led to kosher foods being offered to prison inmates.
After the lawsuit was filed by Howard Ackerman, who is serving a life sentence for kidnapping, the prison attempted to implement a “common fare” menu intended to save the system $1.5M a year, according to JTA.
The menu included shellfish and mixed dairy and meat, both prohibited under Jewish law.
But a judge stopped the prison from using the new menu, and asked nearly 300 other inmates who are receiving a kosher diet if they wished to be included in the injunction.
Some inmates have complained that the approved kosher food is not up to the same standard as what is served to the rest of the prison population. A Las Vegas federal court will hear the inmates’ complaints and decide whether to approve the settlement in October.
